SAT Question of the Day #21

When a large cake is cut into pieces that each weigh 4 ounces, the cake yields 120 pieces.  How many pieces would the cake yield if it were cut into 5-ounce pieces instead?

A.  80
B.  96
C.  24
D.  60
E.  45

The answer is:   B  96

Getting to this answer: If you cut a cake into large pieces, you will produce a smaller number of pieces than you’d have if you cut it into smaller pieces. So you’re looking for a number less than 120. First multiply to find the total weight of the whole cake: 4 x 120 = 480 ounces. Then divide by the new serving size of each piece: 480/5 = 96
