In the sequence 729, 243, x, 27, 9, …, what is the value of x?

The answer is:  81 

Each term in this sequence is one-third of the previous term.  Check your work by dividing x by 3 to be sure that that produces the next term. 

243/3 = 81, 81/3 = 27
