For each month on your phone bill you pay $20.00 plus a fixed amount for every minute of long distance calls.  In May you used 80 long distance minutes and your bills was $28.00.  In June you used 20 more long distance minutes than in May.  What was the charge on your phone bill in June?

A.  $20.00
B.  $28.20
C.  $29.00
D.  $30.00
E.  $32.50

The answer is:  D.  $30.00

How do you get to this answer?  First, determine the price per minute based on what you were charged in May. Subtract the $20 fee from your total of $28, and you will find that you paid $8 for 80 minutes of long distance. That means that 1 minute costs 10 cents.  In June you talked 20 minutes more than in May.
80 + 20 = 100
100 minutes • 10 cents per minute = $1 Add this per-minute fee to your monthly $20, and the bill is $30.
