Kahlo Smith

Hi, my name is Kahlo.  I started tutoring ten years ago as an after-school volunteer. Because I loved working as an educator, I went on to be a Special Education TA, a creative writing coach, and an ACT prep tutor (I scored a 35 on my ACT). I completed my double-major BA at UC Santa Barbara in 3 years, graduating with Highest Honors, Distinction in the Major, UC Regents Scholar designation, and an Academic Excellence award. After college, I worked as an all-subjects K-8 teacher. Since starting my MFA Creative Writing program, I’ve taught multiple college writing and composition courses.

As a tutor, my number-one aim is making my teaching approach work for you. I emphasize your agency and learning style, work collaboratively with you to develop our curriculum, and make sure that each of our sessions is focused on achieving your goals.

As a published author of fiction and poetry, I’m also always excited to work with students on developing creative study strategies or bringing their personal voice to assignments. I think learning is most effective when it’s fun, and I’ve found that to be true whether I’m teaching college English, AP Biology, or fifth-grade math!
